CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT

PATIENT INFORMATION SHEET - MICROALBUMIN SCREENING

The presence of small amounts of protein in urine (microalbuminuria) may indicate an increased risk of developing diabetic complications. Fortunately, this symptom may occur up to 15 years before development of complications and early treatment may be given to prevent or reduce the severity of the complications.

You will be given a white topped plastic container, please label with your full name and date of birth and the date the urine is collected.

The urine sample collected should be a sample of the first urine passed after rising from your night's sleep. As exercise will also cause protein to naturally occur in the urine we ask that you to refrain from vigorous exercise and/or sexual intercourse for at least 24hours before you collect  the urine samples.

Once collected return the sample and request form s soon as possible to the Pathology Department at Basildon, Orsett or St. Andrew's Hospital or to your GP's surgery. (Please ensure urine is stored in the fridge or a cool place, if sample is not being delivered within 12 hours).

Collection Procedure

Day 1

No vigorous exercise

Day 2

After rising from your night's sleep collect a sample of the first urine passed into a white topped container and cap tightly. Label with your full name, date of birth and the date of sample.  Store sample in plastic bag, in refrigerator if possible.

Note:
If protein is found in this sample you may be required to collect another 2 urine samples to confirm the diagnosis.
