MALE INFERTILITY AND SEMEN ANALYSIS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF SEMEN ANALYSIS?
The main purpose of semen analysis is to check that the spermatozoa are functioning normally. Amongst other things the semen will be tested for are the speed at which the spermatozoa move (motility), sperm structure (morphology) and how many spermatozoa are present (sperm density or count). Knowledge of this can help in any subsequent treatment that may be given

2.

WHY ARE TWO SAMPLES REQUIRED FOR INITIAL EVALUATION?
Semen samples can vary markedly over time, so two initial samples are required for an objective evaluation

3.

WHY MUST THE SAMPLE BE OBTAINED BY MASTURBATION?
Other methods can lead to loss of part of the sample and/or contamination of the sample.

4.

WHY CAN’T I USE A SHEATH (CONDOM)?
Condoms contain spermicide which has a harmful effect on the spermatozoa.

5.

WHY MUST THE SAMPLE BE KEPT WARM?
Since spermatozoa are at 37ºC temperature inside the body they must be kept as near to that temperature as possible once ejaculated into the container. This is why samples must not be sent by post and must reach the laboratory as soon as possible after production.

6.

HOW LONG DOES THE ANALYSIS TAKE?
In most cases the analysis will take two days from start to finish. The results should be with your doctor within one week.

7.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO KNOW IF THE WHOLE SAMPLE IS COLLECTED?
The majority of the sperm are found in the first part of the sample. If some of the sample is lost, this will give an erroneous result for the sperm density (sperm count).

8.

WHY ARE SAMPLES NOT ACCEPTED AFTER 4.00 p.m?
The analysis is complex and samples received after this time will not have time to be processed before the laboratory closes.
