GUIDELINES FOR CYTOTOXIC SPILLAGE

Cytotoxic spillage is any drug solution or powder, any body wastes ie urine, vomitus or faeces of any patient who has received cytotoxic therapy in the last 24 hours. 

SOLUTION OR LIQUID SPILLAGE

1.       Cover immediately with disposable absorbent towels (paper hand towels are satisfactory).

2.       Prior to clean up, put on protective clothing, gown, double gloves and eye protection.

3.       Absorb all liquid into paper towels and place in heavy duty plastic bag.

4.       Wash contaminated area with copious amounts of water and absorb with paper towels.

5.       Repeat washing and cleaning procedure.

6.       Discard all contaminated materials into heavy duty plastic bags.

7.       Clearly label as CYTOTOXIC WASTE and send for incineration.

8.       Complete incident form.

DRY POWDER SPILLAGE

1.       Cover immediately with damp disposable absorbent towels without disturbing powder.

2.       Prior to clean up, put on protective clothing, gown, double gloves and eye protection.

3.       Wipe up powder spillage with paper towels and place in heavy duty plastic bag.

4.       Wash contaminated area with copious amounts of water and absorb with paper towels.

5.       Repeat washing and cleaning procedure.

6.       Discard all contaminated materials into heavy duty plastic bags.

7.       Clearly label as CYTOTOXIC WASTE and send for incineration.

8.       Complete incident form.
