TOOLS AND PREPARATIONS RECOMMENDED FOR ORAL CARE
When oral intervention is needed, a
small brush should be used. Where
a small toothbrush is not tolerated, foam sticks moistened with water can
be used. Tooth brushing may be
contra-indicated in patients with severe thrombocytopenia (low platelet
count) who are susceptible to bleeding. Patients who are not at risk of
developing oral complications should still be encouraged to brush their
teeth regular after meals. Basildon & Thurrock General
Hospitals NHS Trust recommend the following preparations for oral care. Sodium Chloride 0.9% solution Encourage patient to gargle for 1-2
minutes. This solution can be
used for patients with bleeding or swollen gums, this reduces pain and
swelling and aids tissue granulation and healing. Teledont Mouth Wash Tablets One table in 100ml of water to be
kept in a covered container, labelled with the patient’s name and
date/time solution was made. This
has a mild disinfection action and is a refreshing mouthwash. Sodium Bicarbonate Powder One 5ml teaspoon mixed in 500ml of
warm water to be kept in a covered container, labelled with patients name
and date/time solution was made. This
is an effective cleansing agent on dry encrusted areas. EILER’S SCORING Between 8 – 10, offer regular
mouth washes particularly after meals. Between 11 – 16, three hourly
oral care, nurse assisted if necessary A score of 17 or above, 2 hourly oral care should be encouraged. |
