Test Directory - S-100 Protein

Synonyms

S100B

Clinical Indications

S-100, an acidic calcium-binding protein, is present within cells of neuroendocrine origin. Recent studies suggest S-100 has particular utility in staging of malignant melanoma, in establishing prognosis, in evaluating treatment success and in predicting relapse. Circulating S-100 levels very sensitively detect metastatic growth of malignant melanoma, particularly in stage IV disease.
